British Mezzo Soprano, Claire Barnett-Jones is currently furthering her studies on the Preparatory Opera Course at the Royal Academy of Music with Sarah Walker and Mary Hill after completing her BMus at Birmingham Conservatoire in 2012, studying with Louise Crane. She will be continuing at the RAM on the prestigious Royal Academy Opera Course later this year. Her studies are support by The Ian Fleming Award administered by the Helping Musicians UK, The Simon Fletcher Charitable Trust, The Bishop Foxes Foundation, The Police Dependants Trust and The William Gibbs Educational Trust.
Claire’s operatic roles have included Martha (Faust), Calliope (Orpheus and the Underworld), Isabella (L’Italiana in Algeri), Mrs Paskova (The Cunning Little Vixen), Emma Jones (Street Scene), Dorabella (Cosi fan Tutte), Florence Pike (Albert Herring), Old Lady (Candide), Bianca (Rape of Lucretia), Zita (Gianni Schicchi) and Sorceress and Dido (Dido and Aeneas). Claire was a chorus mentor with Birmingham Opera Company, for the world premier of a new opera, Life is a Dream, by Jonathan Dove, directed by Graham Vick, and a Consort Member on the EMI Recording of Damon Albarn’s Opera, Dr Dee, recently performed at English National Opera.
Claire has a wide Concert Repertoire, singing throughout the UK and Europe, including Mozart’s Requiem, Lalande’s Te Deum, Handel’s Messiah and Rossini’s Petite Messe Solenelle.
Recent engagements have included creating the role of ‘Alto 1’ in the World Premier of Stockhausen’s Mittwoch aus Licht with Birmingham Opera Company and Ex Cathedra as part of the Cultural Olympiad. She also reprised this role when it was performed at the Royal Albert Hall for the BBC Proms 2013.
Claire has also had much success in competitions, winning the Gordon Clinton Prize for English Song, the Cecil Drew Prize for Oratorio, Birmingham Conservatoire Singing Prize, the Leamington Spa Music Prize and the Town Hall, Symphony Hall Recital Prize, which includes a solo recital at either Birmingham Town Hall, or Birmingham Symphony Hall. She is also the prize winner of the Ashlyean Opera Prize and the Mario Lanza Opera Prize and she was a finalist Dean and Chadlington Singing Competition.
